PageHabit Review, January 2017 (Fantasy Box)
It’s arrived! Being a box reviewer is fun, but I have to WAIT to see the contents until after I’ve photographed my unboxing process! It is agonizing sometimes – LOL! My patience is a bit lacking.
I get downright giddy over book boxes, and subscribe to WAY too many! I don’t mean to be a book hoarder – it’s just that I can’t read them all that fast. I know, I know, stop subscribing until I get caught up…but I CAN’T! I’m not the only one. There is a term for this condition: Subscription Box Addict. I’m that. But it’s better than being a heroine addict, right?
Be sure to take photos of your PageHabit unboxing and post them on social media using the tag #mypagehabit – they will donate another book for each one!
January Book donations are going to Ghana. I’ve actually heard of Ghana! Usually I get a much-needed geography lesson. 😉
This side of the insert shows the books sent to the other genres for the month, the details of their referral program (which is a great deal, btw!), and an announcement that you can add an additional annotated box to you box. They are fueling my addiction with that new feature, but I was strong this month!!
So I changed it up this time! If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you know I subscribe to the “Horror” box normally, and occasionally add on a mystery book. Well, this month I was in the mood for something different so I went with fantasy! PageHabit doesn’t give out spoilers per se, but they do give you a ‘hint’ about the upcoming books in each genre, and when I read that the fantasy book had an ‘apocalyptic feel’ this month, I decided to go with it. I am a big sucker for an end of the world story! When I was young (eons ago) I must have read ‘Swan Song‘ by Robert McCammon about 10 times! Plus, it’s good to get out your comfort zone every once in awhile and read something different.
It’s easy to switch genres in this subscription, but the process is unusual. It makes you cancel your box, then resubscribe into the genre you wish to change to. Since you are not charged until they get ready to ship, it’s no big deal – just don’t forget to switch back before the next billing unless you want to stay in that genre! Most subscriptions charge you immediately upon subscribing (or resubscribing), so I thought it would be helpful to clarify that.
The Wolves of Winter by Tyrell Johnson – Retail Value $26 (Amazon $15.36)
A sneak preview of all the annotations throughout the book!
A captivating tale of humanity pushed beyond its breaking point, of family and bonds of love forged when everything is lost, and of a heroic young woman who crosses a frozen landscape to find her destiny. This debut novel is written in a post-apocalyptic tradition that spans The Hunger Games and Station Eleven but blazes its own distinctive path.
Forget the old days. Forget summer. Forget warmth. Forget anything that doesn’t help you survive in the endless white wilderness beyond the edges of a fallen world.
Lynn McBride has learned much since society collapsed in the face of nuclear war and the relentless spread of disease. As the memories of her old life continue to haunt, she’s forced to forge ahead in the snow-drifted Canadian Yukon, learning how to hunt and trap and slaughter.
Shadows of the world before have found her tiny community—most prominently in the enigmatic figure of Jax, who brings with him dark secrets of the past and sets in motion a chain of events that will call Lynn to a role she never imagined.
Simultaneously a heartbreakingly sympathetic portrait of a young woman searching for the answer to who she is meant to be and a frightening vision of a merciless new world in which desperation rules, The Wolves of Winter is enveloping, propulsive, and poignant.
I’m so excited to read this! It gets 4.5 stars on Amazon.
The author has a cute pup that looks a bit wolf-ish; how fitting! It seems I’ve been getting/reading a lot of books lately whose authors are from Washington State – where I spent most of my life! Maybe it’s a sign I should go for a visit soon. 🙂
Here’s the personal letter from the author. In almost every single letter I’ve received since starting PageHabit, the author mentions his/her ‘handwriting’ in some way; usually that they never do it and are bad at it. I find this both fascinating and funny, however it is also sad that hand-writing is a rarity these days; a thing of the past. I guess they are not allowed to type their letters – so that we are assured of the authenticity. Way to go PageHabit!
Antique Bronze Brass Bookmark with Resin Image of Library – Retail Value $10? (NOTE: I couldn’t find this exact item online, but several very similar ones averaged about $10.)
This is a really nice bookmark; and I love the image! I collect bookmarks (shocking, I know), so this was a win for me.
I realize it would work (and look) better to put the bookmark on the right side…but oh well. You get the idea. 😉
Another bookmark! This is the regularly scheduled bookmark included in each box that has a new custom design each month. I don’t mind getting two bookmarks because they are completely different, and also because just like shoes, you can never have too many!
The bookmark quote this month: “It is our choices that show what we truly are far more than our abilities.” Oh how true this is. I will abstain from snarky comments. Just this once.
Bookmark backup!
Kikkerland 8 Tree-Friendly Pencils – Retail Value $6
These are really sweet little pencils that come in packaging that resembles a matchbook.
Apparently you can sharpen the pencils on the sandpaper strip; although I’m not sure how well that will work. I’ll need to test it out.
I like the idea of keeping these in the kitchen by the phone, or maybe even put them in my purse. Nothing survives long in my purse, though.
Immaculate Obsession by John Affleck (Short Story) – Retail Value $1 (NOTE: You can read this for free at Great Jones Street, but the (limited) paper version goes for about a dollar if you can find it.
The first time his mom sets the house on fire, he’s halfway through watching the best football game of all time. The timing couldn’t be worse. But it’s OK, because he got invited to watch the second half of the game at Oscar and Tony’s house. When he returns home, he wants to tell Dad all about it, but he’s not sure he’s listening.
Confession time. I *hate* football. I pretty much hate all sports except boxing and MMA, but I especially don’t want to read about sports. That being said, the description on the back is a bit intriguing nonetheless. The FIRST time my mom set the house on fire? LOL! And during a football game no less – can’t say I blame her! I’ll read it since it’s a short story. *grin*
The January spread! What do you think? I really enjoy this box – the book picks are great, the little goods are cute and useful, the author’s letter and annotations are a special treat, and they donate books to children! A total thumb’s up in my opinion. The total retail value of this box is $43, or $32.36 using Amazon pricing. Either way, the value exceeds the cost of the box; not even taking the value of the letter, annotations or bookmark into consideration! I’m impressed!
PageHabit Review, February 2018 (Horror Box)
Here we go again!
Unboxing PageHabit is so fun!
Don’t forget to take photos of your own PageHabit unboxing and post them on social media using the tag #mypagehabit – they will donate another book for each one!
Book donations went off to Ethiopia in February!
Do any of the offered books for February interest you? I want to read all of them of course…
This month’s horror pick is…
Look For Her by Emily Winslow – Retail Value $15.99 (Amazon $12.70)
Loaded with annotations by the author!
Everyone loves a beautiful missing girl…
“Look For Her ratchets up the tension while also offering moments of sheer grace.”-Riley Sager, bestselling author of Final Girls
“Beautifully written with an expertly twisty, surprising story, this is a must-read!”
— Chevy Stevens, New York Times bestselling author of Never Let You GoLilling might seem like an idyllic English village, but it’s home to a dark history. In 1976, a teenage girl named Annalise Wood disappeared, and though her body was later discovered, the culprit was never found. Decades later, Annalise maintains a perverse kind of celebrity, and is still the focus of grief, speculation, and for one young woman, a disturbing, escalating jealousy.
When DNA linked to the Annalise murder unexpectedly surfaces, cold case detective Morris Keene and his former partner, Chloe Frohmann, hope to finally bring closure to this traumatized community. But the new evidence instead undoes the case’s only certainty: the buried body that had long ago been confidently identified as Annalise may be someone else entirely, and instead of answers, the investigators face only new puzzles.
Whose body was unearthed all those years ago, and what happened to the real Annalise? Is someone interfering with the investigation? And is there a link to a present-day drowning with eerie connections? With piercing insight and shocking twists, Emily Winslow explores the dark side of sensationalized crime in this haunting psychological thriller.
I’ve heard so many good things about this book, so I’m excited to read it!
This is a fun letter! I like it when there are drawings and doodles and stuff. 🙂
It’s a spooky looking bookmark this month that kinda matches the book cover! Where I grew up, this is exactly what my back yard looked like when it got foggy. I used to get scared that a rogue bear was going to sneak up and eat me. I’m not kidding.
“Sleep is good he said, and books are better.” – George R.R. Martin
Personally, I’m a fan of both.
Black Knitted Ribbed Beanie “Bookworm” Hat – Retail Value $15? (NOTE: I found the same style hat, but without the ‘bookworm’ logo, so I added a dollar to the price for the custom detail.)
I am IN LOVE with this hat!! I wear black every day, I love soft knits, and I’m a total bookworm! This is the best ‘bookish’ item EVER! I will get a lot of use out of this.
Look how cute this is on!
Kikkerland Talking Bubble Sticky Notes – Retail Value $9.34
I use a ton of sticky notes – and these are cool! Some people use planners, some people use their smartphone…but me? I use sticky notes. It’s how I roll. They’re everywhere.
Fred & Friends “Mark My Words” Book Markers – Retail Value $6
These are fun little book markers with sayings on them – they’re so different! I don’t have anything like them in my bookmark collection.
I would say the only negative thing is they aren’t too long, and may fall out pretty easily. If you are just laying your book on a table or solid surface, you’re fine, but if the book gets tipped or knocked, those suckers can slip right out and you’ll lose your place – the horror!! I’m going to keep them by my bedside table for when I read in bed, so I should be good.
I think these are a great idea; maybe I’ll design some that are longer! Don’t steal my idea now! 😉
“Rip Van Winkle” Short Story by Washington Irving – Retail Value $1 (or you can read it for free online here.)
I don’t know anything about Rip Van Winkle (although I’ve heard of the classic), so this will be interesting for me!
PageHabit usually includes a short story in every box; sometimes the same in all boxes, and sometimes geared towards the genre you chose. I think it is a fun and unique thing!
This is probably my favorite PageHabit Box to date! For reals! I love the skull cap, the sticky notes, the book markers, and of course the books.
The total retail value of this box is $47.33, or $44.04 using Amazon pricing. Either way, the value exceeds the cost of the box; not even taking into account the value of the letter, annotations or bookmark! Awesome!
