My reviews will cover the PageHabit HORROR genre for March & April of 2018!
PageHabit Horror Box Review, March 2018
I usually receive my PageHabit Horror Box around the 3rd week of the month – sometimes the last week of the month. Billing is typically between the 17th and the 21st of the month, right before it ships.
Ta-Da! Snap. Give. Read. If you post a photo on social media of your unboxing with the tag #mypagehabit – they donate an additional book to a child without access!
Here is the March 2018 spread…that’s a creepy-ass-looking book cover, right?!?
For the month of March 2018, the book donations went to Kenya. The card insert gives information about the donation program and statistics about the area.
Just something I noticed looking at the statistics (which are usually upsetting)…Use of improved sanitation facilities is 29.4%, but access to mobile phones is 71.90%? WTF?!? I’d say they have their priorities a little out of whack. Maybe it’s just me.
This side of the insert shows you all the book picks that month for each genre, and how you can get $10 off your next box with their referral program. It never fails – I always wish I had added an extra book – ha! Remember, you can add on an extra book for $18.99 (no additional tax or shipping) each month that includes author annotations.
Each box comes with a letter from the author of the genre you chose (you will not receive a letter for any add-on books). This month’s horror author wrote a LONG ASS letter! Usually they are only one page, maybe two if you’re lucky – but this guy had something to say!
All PageHabit books come with annotations by the author inside – even add-on books!
About the author:
Robert Ashcroft, trained as cryptologic linguist, has worked as a State Department contractor and was recently mobilized to serve abroad with the US Army Reserve.
The Megarothke by Robert Ashcroft – Retail Value $16 (Amazon $11)
Amazon excerpt:
Blade Runner meets Westworld via Resident Evil in this shocking, gripping debut sci-fi/horror novel infused with Nietzschean philosophy, exploring humanity’s darkest desire for transcendence.
Seven years after the limitless depths of the Hollow War decimated Earth, leaving only 50,000 humans to fight for survival in Los Angeles, Theo Abrams is sent on a mission to destroy the enigmatic being that initiated this apocalypse, confronting the fact that humanity’s yearning to transcend reality caused its downfall . . .
Chocked full of annotations! This book gets a five-star rating on Amazon, although not many reviewers. I’ve heard that this book is hard core with the gore & violence, so essentially right up my alley. It has a unique description, and I really like apocalyptic stuff, so I’m thinking I will really enjoy this one. I’m not entirely sure wtf that thing is on the cover, but it looks like a gigantic spider and that creeps me out. LOL!
The personal notes from the author really adds something; it’s my favorite thing about this subscription.
More sketches!
The Appointment by Kelcie Des Jargins – I couldn’t find anything online about this particular short story, but the link provided is Kelcie’s website where you can learn about her and her work.
PageHabit almost always includes a short story, and they are really fun! I throw them in my purse to read when I’m stuck somewhere and don’t feel like perusing social media.
This one looks pretty interesting – and since I don’t have any pre-knowledge of what it is about, the mystery is absolute.
Each month the PageHabit box includes a custom-made bookmark with a literary quote, too, which I always love and use!
“Many people, myself among them, feel better at the mere sight of a book.” – Jane Smiley
Appropriate and TRUE! At least for me.
Adult Coloring Book (Butterfly) – Estimated Retail Value $5.39 (NOTE: I couldn’t find this exact item online, but the link is to a similar one I found on Amazon.)
These coloring books are a great way to relieve stress and calm your mind down. At first I thought ‘coloring’ as an adult was a little lame, but then I tried it. It does relax you! And it’s fun! I got some great colored pencils to use, too. Who knew?!?
Fred Skeleton Key Covers (Set of 6) – Retail Value $11.63
OK, these are SUPER FUN! I LOVE them! And they glow in the dark!
Totally useful, and totally ME. The people who know me were not surprised at all to see these on my keys.
Kikkerland Cable Photo Holder – Retail Value $9.55
This is a very unique item, and I was so happy to receive it! It’s one of those things you might see in a store and think “that’s cool”, but may not buy it for yourself. Getting it in a box, there it was in front of me, and since I needed to play with it in order to review it, I found that it is a slick way to personalize your work space! Whether you work at home, or in a cubicle, you can display your photos, inspirational quotes, artwork, reminders, (or anything, really)! If you have one of those little Polaroid cameras, those photos are perfect for this.
I didn’t have any photos readily available, so I used a little info card to demonstrate for you. My cable is red, (which matches my red & beige home decor), and it comes with 8 little magnets. There is a loop at the top for hanging, and a weight at the bottom, so that the waxy cable doesn’t stay coiled when hanging.
These little motherfuckers are SERIOUSLY STRONG. I had trouble getting them apart, and KEEPING them apart. Don’t set them on the table close to each other, or they just snap back together – and it’s maddening. That would be my only complaint, although you need them to be strong for thicker or heavier photos.
I gave up on separating them (I have very little patience), so ignore my bulky chunk of 4 magnets.
Very artsy.
So there you have it! There were a lot of items this month; I’m guessing because I received a paperback rather than a hard cover book. The total retail value (at this moment – it fluctuates) is $42.57 ($37.57 with Amazon pricing), which does not include the author’s letter or annotations, the bookmark, the short story, the donation, or any tax or shipping. The value is higher (in both cases) than the cost of the box at $29.99, and if you take the non-valued items into consideration, it’s a grand deal!
I love getting my PageHabit box each month – it’s always a treat. If you think so too, and want to get $10 off of your first box, grab this coupon!
PageHabit Horror Box Review, April 2018
It’s that time again! Woohoo!
Snap. Give. Read! If you post a photo on social media of your unboxing with the tag #mypagehabit – they donate an additional book to a child without access! Do it!
A box of happiness right here. Introducing…PageHabit Horror April 2018!
For the month of April 2018, the book donations went to Burundi. The card insert gives information about the donation program and statistics about the area.
Looking at these statistics compared to last month’s, the use of improved sanitation facilities is 50.10%, and access to mobile phones is 25.70% – which seems more reasonable to me. Obviously the people of Burundi have different priorities than those in Kenya.
This side of the insert shows you all the book picks that month for each genre, and how you can get $10 off your next box with their referral program. Remember, you can add on an extra book for $18.99 (no additional tax or shipping) each month that includes author annotations.
Calling all writers! PageHabit is currently taking submissions for original content to be published. Hmmm….I’m a writer! I’m thinking of submitting something – what do you think??
Each box comes with a letter from the author of the genre you chose (you will not receive a letter for any add-on books). This month’s horror author didn’t write 4 pages-worth like the author last month, but he did show off his artistic skills.
All PageHabit books come with annotations by the author inside – even add-on books!
Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman – Retail Value $27 (Amazon $15.55)
Amazon excerpt:
The Bram Stoker Award–nominated author of Bird Box returns with a haunting tale of love, redemption, and murder.
Carol Evers is a woman with a dark secret. She has died many times . . . but her many deaths are not final: They are comas, a waking slumber indistinguishable from death, each lasting days.
Only two people know of Carol’s eerie condition. One is her husband, Dwight, who married Carol for her fortune, and—when she lapses into another coma—plots to seize it by proclaiming her dead and quickly burying her . . . alive. The other is her lost love, the infamous outlaw James Moxie. When word of Carol’s dreadful fate reaches him, Moxie rides the Trail again to save his beloved from an early, unnatural grave.
And all the while, awake and aware, Carol fights to free herself from the crippling darkness that binds her—summoning her own fierce will to survive. As the players in this drama of life and death fight to decide her fate, Carol must in the end battle to save herself.
The haunting story of a woman literally bringing herself back from the dead, Unbury Carol is a twisted take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page.
Is it just me, or does the author look like trouble?!? Hahaha! I think I might be right; not only is he an accomplished author, but he is also the lead singer of the rock band called “The High Strung”. Musicians are always trouble. I know, I dated one. 😉
A book about a woman buried alive…I hope you have your shittin’ pants on! (Originally said by Negan in ‘The Walking Dead’ – watch below!)
I don’t scare easily. I can pretty much handle anything, and most often ENJOY disturbing, disgusting, gory, immoral and controversial stuff, buuut…the ONE thing that gets to me is the whole BURIED ALIVE thing. FAACK! I will be squirming and squinting and cringing during this book FOR SURE. Maybe I should have gone with the romance genre this month – lol! 😯
What the author didn’t say in his letter, he made up for on a ton of annotations inside the book!
‘Wind’ and ‘Ghosts’ by Lily Bollinger – I couldn’t find these works online, but Lily Bollinger’s famous champagne quote is something you may recognize. She is a fabulous poet, and I think I’m going to put this card up on my cable photo holder in my office that I received in the March PageHabit box!
You can also contact Lily at lilybpoetry@gmail.com.
Appropriate for the Horror Box for sure! I am not sure what other genres received; I would assume just different works from Lily.
Every box gets a custom bookmark!
“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” – Victor Hugo
It’s ironic that I had a TERRIBLE time learning to read; and hated it when I was in grade school. Even now, I am the slowest reader on the planet – BUT, it is now one of my greatest loves! I can’t imagine my life without books.
The bookmarks are sturdy and glossy, which is great for people like me who are hard on them. Notice more of the author’s funky sketches on the annotations – cracks me up!
Cat in the Box Pencil & Erasers Set – Retail Value $3.70
I’m not a cat person, but this is pretty stinkin’ cute.
This little pencil/eraser set is just too sweet. It is a fun item for writing, journaling, sketching – or just to have sticking up out of your pencil jar by the phone!
I noticed a little yellowing on the side, but not a big deal.
Literary Socks “Read” and “Books” Print – Estimated Retail Value $10 (NOTE: I couldn’t find this exact item online, but I based the value on a similar item you can see here.)
These socks are perfect for us bookworms! I always enjoy getting funky socks in subscription boxes, and have quite a collection going.
It’s still a little chilly here in SOCAL, so I promptly put on my socks and got cozy on the couch with my book.
So there’s April! I’m digging my socks, and I’m totally nervous about reading UNBURY CAROL – LOL! The total estimated retail value this month (at this moment – it fluctuates) is $40.70 ($29.25 with Amazon pricing) for a $29.99 box, which does not include the author’s letter or annotations, the bookmark, the poems, the donation, or any tax or shipping. If you take the non-valued items into consideration, it’s a pretty great deal either way!
TTFN, CrazyDogMama! xoxo
