Book of the Month Review, August 2019

Starting on the first day of each month, you can make your book selection online and ship when you are ready.  I always choose to ship right away (which is generally the same or next day), and it takes about a week to get to me in California.  I look forward to seeing the new choices available each month, and I have started checking for them a few days before the first of the month, because SOMETIMES they post them early!

These were the August 2019 choices, chosen by 5 different curators to ensure a diverse selection.  On the BOTM website you can read the summaries, and the reason why each was chosen by it’s curator.  This month they had two repeat authors, and two early releases!

Read.Love.Repeat.” – Yes!

I opted for the 12-month membership because reading is my favorite thing in all the world.

The books always come shrink-wrapped together with a cardboard bottom, and a paper bookmark.  My books have always arrived in perfect condition – no damage at all – even if the box gets beaten up in the mail.

This is the cardboard bottom of the wrapped books with instructions on how to refer friends and get free books!

These are my picks from the August 2019 lineup!  I chose the best ones, of course.  😉  ‘The Reckless Oath We Made‘ by Bryn Greenwood (Contemporary Fiction), ‘The Whisper Man‘ by Alex North (Thriller), and ‘The Turn of the Key‘ by Ruth Ware (Mystery).

I used one credit (required), but then chose to pay $19.98 ($9.99 each) for the add-on books, because that is the best deal price-wise.  You can choose to use credits on add-on books if you like, though.

‘The Reckless Oath We Made’ by Bryn Greenwood – Retail Value $26  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $19.29.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

A provocative love story between a tough Kansas woman on a crooked path to redemption and her unlikeliest of champions, from the New York Times bestselling author of All the Ugly and Wonderful Things.

Many things can bind two people: love, a common enemy, a dangerous promise.

Zee is nobody’s fairy tale princess. Almost six-foot, with a redhead’s temper and a shattered hip, she has a long list of worries: never-ending bills, her beautiful, gullible sister, her five-year-old nephew, her housebound mother, and her drug-dealing boss.

Zee may not be a princess, but Gentry is an actual knight, complete with sword, armor, and a code of honor. Two years ago the voices he hears called him to be Zee’s champion. Both shy and autistic, he’s barely spoken to her since, but he has kept watch, ready to come to her aid.

When an abduction tears Zee’s family apart, she turns to the last person she ever imagined–Gentry–and sets in motion a chain of events that will not only change both of their lives, but bind them to one another forever in one of the most moving and complicated love stories of our time. The Reckless Oath We Made redefines what it means to be heroic, revealing the strength, honor, and power that lie at the heart of love.

Why I chose this book:  This was a no-brainer choice – Bryn Greenwood’s “All the Ugly and Wonderful Things” is one of my all-time favorite books, so I didn’t even have to read the synopsis of this one to know I was going to get it!  However, once I DID read the description, my heart burned for it.  Autism is near & dear to my heart, and I know this author will do it up right.  I’m bringing a Kleenex box to this show though, just in case.

All BOTM books are specially labeled with the BOTM logo on the front of the book jacket, and also on the back with the month/year the book was featured.

‘The Turn of the Key’ by Ruth Ware – Retail Value $27.99  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $16.92.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Death of Mrs. Westaway comes Ruth Ware’s highly anticipated fifth novel.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten—by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the unravelling events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the cameras installed around the house, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman, Jack Grant.

It was everything.

She knows she’s made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn’t always ideal. She’s not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she’s not guilty—at least not of murder. Which means someone else is.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, The Turn of the Key is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Why I chose this book:  Ruth Ware is a popular author, and for good reason!  Her mysteries are fun to read and her writing is compared to the beloved Agatha Christie.  How can one resist that?  Plus, look at that pretty cover!

All BOTM books are specially labeled with the BOTM logo on the front of the book jacket, and also on the back with the month/year the book was featured.

‘The Whisper Man’ by Alex North – Retail Value $26.99  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $12.96.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

In this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of a father and son caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town.

After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank.

But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed “The Whisper Man,” for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.

Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter’s crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.

And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window…

Why I chose this book:  Whenever BOTM has a thriller or horror genre choice, I’m all over it.  Also, any story about a serial killer with a title gets my attention!  I read this one pretty quickly, and it kept my attention the entire time, however it wasn’t a gore-fest.  It had more of what I call a creep-factor, with a little boy who talks to people who aren’t there.  You might be nervous that the monster is a child-killer, but don’t worry, the writer isn’t trying to shock you, and more is left to the imagination than not.  I wouldn’t call this a five-star read, but I did enjoy it and liked how the reader is left to decide about the little boy’s experience.  I’d like to add too, that the relationship between the father & son is well done and endearing.

All BOTM books are specially labeled with the BOTM logo on the front of the book jacket, and also on the back with the month/year the book was featured.

Each monthly box comes with a complimentary cardboard ‘Book of the Month’ bookmark.

I love these bookmarks!  They are simple, functional and are the perfect size & weight.

Reading with dogs!  Jack loves Mama’s ‘Me Time’ – lol!  Here I was curled up on the couch in the dead of Winter reading ‘The Whisper Man’ with the cutest pup on the planet.

So what do you think of Book of the Month?  The total retail value of my August box was $89.98 ($49.17 using current Amazon prices), and I paid $32.48 ($12.50 for 1 book credit used from my 12-month subscription + $19.98 for my add-on books.) – so this is an awesome deal, even over Amazon prices!  If you are bookworm like me, and want to be in the loop on the latest releases, I highly recommend this box – you just can’t go wrong!   I love being introduced to new authors, and titles I may not have even known about.  I’m also more inclined to try new genres I wouldn’t consider otherwise, so I’m expanding my horizons, too!

Book of the Month Review, September 2019

Starting on the first day of each month (sometimes a few days early!), you can make your book selection online and ship when you are ready.

These were the September 2019 choices, chosen by 5 different curators to ensure a diverse selection.  On the BOTM website you can read the summaries, and the reason why each was chosen by it’s curator.  This month they had two debut authors, and two early releases!  One of the books was also voted as a 2019 Book of the Year finalist by subscribers.

Read.Love.Repeat.” – Always!

I opted for the 12-month auto-renewing membership because reading is my life!

The books always come shrink-wrapped together with a cardboard bottom, and a paper bookmark.  My books have always arrived in perfect condition – no damage at all – even if the box gets beaten up in the mail.

Here are my September 2019 picks; two from the current month’s selections, and one from their additionally available titles.  ‘Wild Game‘ by Adrienne Brodeur (Memoir), ‘The Chestnut Man‘ by Alex North (Thriller), and ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette‘ by Maria Semple (Contemporary Fiction).

I used one credit (required), but then chose to pay $19.98 ($9.99 each) for the add-on books, because that is the best deal price-wise.  You can choose to use credits on add-on books if you like, though.

‘The Chestnut Man’ by Søren Sveistrup – Retail Value $28.99  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $13.50.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

A friend of mine texted me “Have you read ‘The Chestnut Man yet?  Ooooooh, it’s so good!”  I texted back, “No, but I just got it in my BOTM!” and sent her this photo.  It’s exciting when you are reading a thriller with someone – I highly recommend book buddies!

Amazon Description:

FROM THE CREATOR OF THE HIT TELEVISION SHOW THE KILLING, “a full-throttle thriller in the tradition of classic Stieg Larsson” (A.J. Finn)—SOON TO BE A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES.

IF YOU FIND ONE, HE’S ALREADY FOUND YOU

A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen.

His calling card is a “chestnut man”—a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts—which he leaves at each bloody crime scene.

Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery—a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago.

A tragic coincidence—or something more twisted?

To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues.

Because it’s clear that the madman is on a mission that is far from over.

And no one is safe.

Why I chose this book:  Another book about a serial killer with a title!  Similar, but not the same as ‘The Whisper Man’ in last month’s BOTM lineup, I did what I always do and clicked ‘add to box’ without even reading the description first.  I am so glad I did!  ‘The Chestnut Man’ starts out VERY violent, and VERY bloody – so beware!  I enjoyed the hell outta this story, even though it is over 500 pages, and will be watching to see what this author does next.  I read in a few reviews that this book felt predictable and tired, but I didn’t feel that way at all, and I’ve read a lot of books in this genre.  There is a ‘hint’ of a love story there, but it doesn’t take away from the story, and certainly isn’t prescriptive.  I do agree with the assessment that this writer is similar to Stieg Larsson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and being that I love that series, it makes sense that this one rang my book bell, too.

All BOTM books are specially labeled with the BOTM logo on the front of the book jacket, and also on the back with the month/year the book was featured.

‘Wild Game’ by Adrienne Brodeur – Retail Value $27  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $13.59.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

A daughter’s tale of living in the thrall of her magnetic, complicated mother, and the chilling consequences of her complicity.

On a hot July night on Cape Cod when Adrienne was fourteen, her mother, Malabar, woke her at midnight with five simple words that would set the course of both of their lives for years to come: Ben Souther just kissed me.

Adrienne instantly became her mother’s confidante and helpmate, blossoming in the sudden light of her attention, and from then on, Malabar came to rely on her daughter to help orchestrate what would become an epic affair with her husband’s closest friend. The affair would have calamitous consequences for everyone involved, impacting Adrienne’s life in profound ways, driving her into a precarious marriage of her own, and then into a deep depression. Only years later will she find the strength to embrace her life—and her mother—on her own terms.

Wild Game is a brilliant, timeless memoir about how the people close to us can break our hearts simply because they have access to them, and the lies we tell in order to justify the choices we make. It’s a remarkable story of resilience, a reminder that we need not be the parents our parents were to us.

Why I chose this book:  OK, so first, I love memoirs.  Second, I had a somewhat ‘complicated’ relationship with my mother, so this book piqued my interest.  I’m curious to read about how this story unfolds; how the actions of the mother truly influence the daughter’s life.  Human nature is fascinating, if not frightening, so I’m going into this with an open mind and an open heart.  This book gets impressively high marks, so I’m hoping for a great take-away from this story.

All BOTM books are specially labeled with the BOTM logo on the front of the book jacket, and also on the back with the month/year the book was featured.

‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette’ by Maria Semple – Retail Value $16.99  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $12.96.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

A misanthropic matriarch leaves her eccentric family in crisis when she mysteriously disappears in this “whip-smart and divinely funny” novel that inspired the movie starring Cate Blanchett (New York Times).

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she’s a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she’s a disgrace; to design mavens, she’s a revolutionary architect; and to 15-year-old Bee, she is her best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette vanishes. It all began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette’s intensifying allergy to Seattle — and people in general — has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, and secret correspondence — creating a compulsively readable and surprisingly touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.

Why I chose this book:  I had seen this title floating around before the movie hit the masses, but for some reason it wasn’t on my hot list.  After seeing that Cate Blanchett was playing Bernadette, all of a sudden I got all lit up about it.  I love Cate Blanchett!  As I looked into what the story is about, I realized I almost passed by a gem.  When I saw that BOTM had this title in the add-on store and labeled it as “Quirky, Hilarious and Heartbreaking”, I grabbed it right away.  I’m excited to read this story, and THEN I’ll go see the movie.  😉

So what do you think of Book of the Month?  The total retail value of my September box was $72.98 ($40.05 using current Amazon prices), and I paid $32.48 ($12.50 for 1 book credit used from my 12-month subscription + $19.98 for my add-on books.) – so this is an awesome deal, even over Amazon prices!

Book of the Month Review, October 2019

Starting on the first day of each month (sometimes a day or two earlier!), you can make your book selection online and ship when you are ready.  There has only been one month in almost 4 years where my box was delayed a week or so because of them running out of one particularly popular title.  I would say that is pretty damn good!

These were the October 2019 choices, chosen by 5 different curators to ensure a diverse selection.  On the BOTM website you can read the summaries, and the reason why each was chosen by it’s curator.  This month they had a 3-peat author, a debut, and two early releases!  Also, one of the books is a #readwithmc selection, which is the popular Marie Claire’s Online Monthly Book Club.

Read.Love.Repeat.” – Story of my life!

I have always opted for the 12-month membership because reading is my most favorite thing in all the world.  I’ve never been disappointed!

The books always come shrink-wrapped together with a cardboard bottom, and a paper bookmark.  My books have always arrived in perfect condition – no damage at all – even if the box gets beaten up in the mail.

Here are my October 2019 picks; two from the current month’s selections, and one from their additionally available titles. ‘Nothing to See Here’ by Kevin Wilson (Magical Realism), ‘Imaginary Friend’ by Stephen Chbosky (Horror), and ‘What Happens in Paradise‘ by Elin Hilderbrand (Contemporary Fiction).

I used one credit (required), but then chose to pay $19.98 ($9.99 each) for the add-on books, because that is the best deal price-wise.  You can choose to use credits on add-on books if you like, though.

‘Nothing to See Here’ by Kevin Wilson – Retail Value $26.99  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $12.99.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, People, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, TIME, The A.V. Club, Buzzfeed, and PopSugar

“I can’t believe how good this book is…. It’s wholly original. It’s also perfect…. Wilson writes with such a light touch…. The brilliance of the novel [is] that it distracts you with these weirdo characters and mesmerizing and funny sentences and then hits you in a way you didn’t see coming. You’re laughing so hard you don’t even realize that you’ve suddenly caught fire.” —Taffy Brodesser-Akner, author of Fleishman is in Trouble, New York Times Book Review

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Family Fang, a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with a remarkable ability.

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other—and stay cool—while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her—urgently and fiercely. Couldn’t this be the start of the amazing life she’d always hoped for?

With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet—a most unusual story of parental love.

Why I chose this book:  This is SO NOT a story I would normally pay any attention to.  “Magical Realism” is generally not my thing, I prefer “Realistic Realism”.  BUT.  I couldn’t help but be intrigued about all the attention this book is getting.  So many people saying that they weren’t expecting to love it as much as they did.  The more I saw about it, the more I realized I needed to get out of my comfort zone and give it a try.  I’ll let you know what I think!  Be sure to watch for it in ‘CrazyDogMama’s Book Reviews‘.

‘Imaginary Friend’ by Stephen Chbosky – Retail Value $30  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $15.00.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

A young boy is haunted by a voice in his head in this acclaimed epic of literary horror from the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Christopher is seven years old.
Christopher is the new kid in town.
Christopher has an imaginary friend.

We can swallow our fear or let our fear swallow us.

Single mother Kate Reese is on the run. Determined to improve life for her and her son, Christopher, she flees an abusive relationship in the middle of the night with her child. Together, they find themselves drawn to the tight-knit community of Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. It’s as far off the beaten track as they can get. Just one highway in, one highway out.
At first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. Then Christopher vanishes. for six long days, no one can find him. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged. He returns with a voice in his head only he can hear, with a mission only he can complete: Build a treehouse in the woods by Christmas, or his mother and everyone in the town will never be the same again.
Twenty years ago, Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower made readers everywhere feel infinite. Now, Chbosky has returned with an epic work of literary horror, years in the making, whose grand scale and rich emotion redefine the genre. Read it with the lights on.

Why I chose this book:  The horror genre gets a bad rap most of the time (much like erotica), but I’m so happy to see that it is making a big comeback!  I’ve also seen an upsurge in the ‘imaginary friend’ trope lately (see ‘The Whisper Man’).  This was the perfect book to add to my October BOTM box – I mean, who doesn’t like a good scare for Halloween?!?  Also something to note – this is a HUGE ASS book.  If you threw it at someone, you could kill them.  So be careful.  Just sayin’.

All BOTM books are specially labeled with the BOTM logo on the front of the book jacket, and also on the back with the month/year the book was featured.  This book was special – it also has ‘Spooky Reads’ printed on the back.  🙂

‘What Happens in Paradise’ by Elin Hilderbrand – Retail Value $28  (NOTE:  You can currently find it on Amazon for $16.90.  Commissions may be earned if purchased via link provided.)

Amazon Description:

Spend your winter on sunlit shores in the New York Times bestselling follow-up to Winter in Paradise, as secret lives and new loves emerge under the bright Caribbean sky.

A year ago, Irene Steele had the shock of her life: her loving husband, father to their grown sons and successful businessman, was killed in a helicopter crash. But that wasn’t Irene’s only shattering news: he’d also been leading a double life on the island of St. John, where another woman loved him, too.

Now Irene and her sons are back on St. John, determined to learn the truth about the mysterious life — and death — of a man they thought they knew. Along the way, they’re about to learn some surprising truths about their own lives, and their futures.

Lush with the tropical details, romance, and drama that made Winter in Paradise a national bestseller, What Happens in Paradise is another immensely satisfying page-turner from one of America’s most beloved and engaging storytellers.

Why I chose this book:  Here is another example of a book that I wouldn’t necessarily pick out on my own, but that BOTM put on my radar.  The one thing a subscription box does, is give you the opportunity to get out of ruts and expand your experiences!  Whether it is books, clothing, makeup or jewelry, what keeps me trying out so many different types of boxes is the introduction to a wide variety of items that I may otherwise pass up, or not even know about.  Even if you aren’t a chick-lit kind of person, Elin Hilderbrand is the kind of writer that can draw you into a story and it’s characters so completely, that you forget they aren’t real.  I had chosen the first book in this series (Winter in Paradise) in my October 2018 BOTM box, so this was an obvious selection for me.  I can’t wait to see where she takes this story!

So what do you think of Book of the Month?  The total retail value of my August box was $84.99 ($44.89 using current Amazon prices), and I paid $32.48 ($12.50 for 1 book credit used from my 12-month subscription + $19.98 for my add-on books.) – so this is an awesome deal, even over Amazon prices!
