Gen YZ Box Review, September 2018 + Coupon!

Have y’all seen the GEN YZ Box?!? It is a funky & fun subscription box for preteen, teen and young adult women (or 47 year old’s) that has really impressed me!  I was asked to do a review for this box that (shockingly) I had not heard of before, and when I found out that the creator/owner is a teen herself, I couldn’t believe it.  At 18, I could barely bus tables, let alone run my own company!  You can read about this amazing young entrepreneur here.  Whether or not you like the type of items in this box (although I think you will!), you have to appreciate the talent and ambition of this amazing young woman – she is an honest-to-God GIRLBOSS!

The GEN YZ Box was created with ‘Generation Y’ (young adults 16+), and ‘Generation Z’ (pre-teens and teens) in mind, but may just win the hearts of ladies of all ages.  There are three different sized boxes offered that include a variety of unique and whimsical items that range from decor & gadgets, to jewelry & accessories, to bath & beauty – all curated to make you smile and express yourself.

Gen Y Box Review, September 2018

Here we go!  So, because there was a rather large item in this month’s Gen Y box, the smaller ‘Itty Bitty’ box was used to pack the additional items, instead of the normal and larger “Gen Y” box.  So, just to clarify, this review is indeed for the GEN Y (full-sized) box.

This busy little box is full of cute clip art and lots of colors – which is super appropriate for the type of items and ages intended for this subscription.

On each side of this box you will see a hashtag (#) recommendation for your generation (Y or Z) if you choose to share photos of your haul on social media.  I am technically Gen X, but for the purposes of this subscription I am Gen Y.  😉

On the front of the insert card is a Pug-dog face!  Could that be any more perfect for a CRAZYDOGMAMA?  Sorry cat-lovers!

Disney Poison Apple Lamp by Typo – Retail Value $25-30 depending on exchange rate.

I was so excited when I saw this item!  I have never seen anything like it, and it is SO FUN.  I am personally going to keep it out all year long (on my desk, thankyouverymuch) but it’s timely arrival is also perfect for Halloween.  I have quite the collection of Halloween and ‘macabre’ decor, so this was a huge win for me!

Disney items are appropriate for ALL AGES, in my opinion – I know many people who collect and enjoy them.  The poison apple from ‘Snow White’ is such great idea for a lamp, too!

This is a limited edition item as well!  Here are some close-up shots so you can see the detail.  It is cool even before you turn the light on!

It takes two AAA batteries that you insert into the bottom compartment, where you also find the on/off switch.

So you get an idea of scale – it’s huge!

Yes, I know it says for ‘indoor use only’, but I have my morning coffee out here on my balcony, and this poison apple light is the perfect accompaniment on a Fall morning.  I’ll take it inside when I’m done, don’t you worry!

A sparkly-box!  My favorite kind!

Unicorn Horn Necklace by Wristicuffs – Retail Value $18  (NOTE:  This item was made by Wristicuffs exclusively for the GEN YZ Box (so you won’t find it for sale on their site), but I was informed the retail value is $18.)

This black stone carved unicorn horn necklace is featured on a hypoallergenic brass ball chain.  Even though you may not consider it a ‘luxe’ or high-end jewelry item, there will be no green necks here!  And…it is WAY COOL!  I love black and silver, and the ‘spikey-ness’ of it is totally my style.  It is not surprising to me how much I like it though, because Wristicuffs is one of my absolute favorite jewelry designers!  You can see more of their jewelry pieces in my reviews here.

All things ‘unicorn’ is apparently ALL THE RAGE right now; not that I would know.  What I do know is that this necklace is really cool and different, and I get LOTS of compliments on it!  My wardrobe is black, grey or white 95% of the time, so it completely works for me in that regard, too.

Frida Kahlo Inspired Headband – Retail Value $8.99 (based on similar)

If you are looking for some statement ‘flair’ in your wardrobe, this headband will do the job!  Black goes with everything, and it also gives this accessory a darker, more gothic feel as well – so again, perfect for Halloween – especially if you want to go as Frida Kahlo, who rocked floral headbands frequently in both her self portraits and photographs!

Frido Kahlo – the famous and very talented female artist; touted as one of the greatest and most remembered for her bold and colorful style.  If you don’t know much about her, I seriously encourage you to spend some time looking at her work – she is truly unique and passionate, and I myself, find her fascinating.  Receiving this headband in her honor is a treat!

Here’s my “Frida Kahlo” look, sans her bold brows and severed-hand earrings like in the photo above (which are kinda awesome, right?!?).

Novelty Hidden “Pug” Socks by Typo (2 pair) – Retail Value $9.99 (based on similar)

Cutest socks EVER!  I absolutely love the paw print on the bottom!  Also, another perfect item for CrazyDogMama.  They are designed to be ‘hidden’ in your sneakers, but who would want to hide these little guys?!?

Jack approves!  These work best (in my opinion) while reading on the couch with your fuzzy.

Crackle Dust Bath Duo by EmElleEm Soaps – Retail Value $7  (This appears to be an exclusive item for the Gen YZ box, so value is based on similar.)

These are tubes of homemade bath dust; designed to soften your bath water while popping like your favorite childhood candy.  How fun is THAT?!?

I’ve received other products from EmElleEm Soaps, so I already know that I enjoy them!  Gotta love the name ‘Crackle Dust’.  The concept is unique to me – I’ve never had a ‘popping’ bath before!  This should be a hoot.

Great names for the scents, too – ‘Siren Song’ and ‘Rising Tides’, and they smell WONDERFUL.  I keep opening the cap and sniffing.

So you get a sense of scale.  I like the tubes; I’m trying to think of something creative I can do with them after I use the Crackle Dust.  Any ideas??

Packed to the very top!  I’m thinking I can get at least 2 baths per tube.

Well made and sturdy, this COMPLETELY ADORABLE luggage tag will stand out against all of the boring ones for sure!

Seriously adorbs!  This brand seems to be very popular – I had a hard time finding them in stock anywhere.

“Who needs guys when you have fries?” – Well, yeah, of course!  Or…when you have chocolate, wine or any kind of culinary delight, really.  No, I’m not cynical or jaded at all.

Cartoon Cord/Cable Manager (In Purple)– Retail Value $2.99

This was a bonus item!  And a cute & useful one, at that.  Here we see the intended use: as a cord manager.

But I’m a rebel, I like it as a bookmark! I am a nerdy bookworm, so this just makes sense to me. I actually thought that’s what it was when I first saw it in the box.  Only after looking up a price online did I realize it was for cords.  Bah!

And come on, don’t you agree?!?  Look at that!

So there’s the GEN Y Box for September 2018!!  The total retail value is $92.91, and that’s using the low-end of the exchange rate and price fluctuations I found.  I think that is fabulous for a box that costs $44.99!

I have to admit my first thought was that this box was probably just going to have bunch of cheap crap in it like most all of the other teen-focused subscription boxes out there, BUT, I am so happy to report that I WAS WRONG!  The GEN YZ Box is a well-thought-out curation of unique and decent quality popular items that have appeal to many age groups and interests.  I am so very impressed!  I not only like all of the items I received, but I will use them!  I may even buy more of that crackle dust…
