Book of the Month Box Review, March 2019 + Coupon!

Book of the Month is probably the most popular book box out there regarding price, quality & variety.  However, the BEST part of this club is that you get to CHOOSE the book(s) you want, and quite often they offer titles before their official release date!  I’ve subscribed to pretty much every book box out there, and this is the one that I’ve had the longest commitment to because I love it so much!  Today I’m here to show you the books I chose for March 2019.

BOTM Membership costs just $14.99/month for (1) book credit, or less with longer subscription commitments.  Each box includes YOUR CHOICE of (1) newly released hardcover book out of their (5) monthly selections, and you can also add up to (2) more books to your box for only $9.99 each.  If you have additional credits on your account, you can choose to use those to purchase add-on books instead.  The add-on books can be from the current month OR from previous months (as supplies last).  You can skip a month whenever you wish and you won’t be charged; and your credit(s) will roll over to the next month.  Shipping is always free!  Gift memberships are available to purchase as well.

All new monthly titles are available to start selecting on the 1st of the month, and you must also select when to ship your box.  You have until the 6th to make your selection(s), or, if you don’t choose a book and ship your box by the 6th of the month, you will be renewed $14.99 for a credit to redeem the following month.

There are a variety of genres offered each month that may include (but are not limited to): Thriller/Horror, History, Historical Fiction, Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction, YA (Young Adult), Mystery, Romance, Domestic Suspense, Dystopian, Satire, Non-Fiction and Memoir.

I always choose my book(s) promptly on the 1st of the month, and have my box shipped immediately – which is more often than not the same day.  I receive my books around the 8th of the month, give or take a day.  I really look forward to seeing this blue box every month!

These were the March 2019 choices, chosen by 5 different curators to ensure a great selection.  On the website you can read the descriptions, and the reason why each was chosen by it’s curator.  This month there were two debuts and a repeat author.

Read. Love. Repeat. – the BOTM motto!  Also my personal motto.

I opted for the 12-month membership and have enjoyed every book I’ve read so far.  How many books I order each month depends on how many titles sound interesting to me (duh), but I haven’t yet wanted to skip a month because there is always a great variety.  It’s nice to know I have the option to skip, though.

The books come shrink-wrapped together with a cardboard bottom, and a paper bookmark.  My books have always arrived in perfect condition – no damage at all – even if the box gets beaten up in the mail (like this month).

“Daisy Jones and The Six” and “Before She Knew Him” are the titles that stuck out to me this month, so I used one credit and paid $9.99 for the other, because that is the best deal price-wise.

This month’s quote is from Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie:

“Stories matter.  Many stories matter.  Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize.”

I love literary quotes because they not only reaffirm my love for reading, but they also encourage me to write more!  I am a writer, you know, not just a reviewer.  🙂

Description:

Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

A book about sex, drugs & rock n’ roll in the 60’s and 70’s?  YES PLEASE!!  This book has received A LOT of buzz, and everyone seems to be loving it, so this was a no-brainer choice for me.  I was obsessed with Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac for awhile and enjoyed reading about all of their drama, so I figured this was right up my alley.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is the author of the hugely popular “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” and “One True Loves”, so she is no slouch.  “Daisy Jones and The Six” already has a nearly 5-star rating everywhere I can find, so there ya go.  I have a ton of books in my to-be-read pile, but want to get on this one ASAP.

Description:

Catching a killer is dangerous—especially if he lives next door

From the hugely talented author of The Kind Worth Killing comes an exquisitely chilling tale of a young suburban wife with a history of psychological instability whose fears about her new neighbor could lead them both to murder . . .

Hen and her husband Lloyd have settled into a quiet life in a new house outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Hen (short for Henrietta) is an illustrator and works out of a studio nearby, and has found the right meds to control her bipolar disorder. Finally, she’s found some stability and peace.

But when they meet the neighbors next door, that calm begins to erode as she spots a familiar object displayed on the husband’s office shelf. The sports trophy looks exactly like one that went missing from the home of a young man who was killed two years ago. Hen knows because she’s long had a fascination with this unsolved murder—an obsession she doesn’t talk about anymore, but can’t fully shake either.

Could her neighbor, Matthew, be a killer? Or is this the beginning of another psychotic episode like the one she suffered back in college, when she became so consumed with proving a fellow student guilty that she ended up hurting a classmate?

The more Hen observes Matthew, the more she suspects he’s planning something truly terrifying. Yet no one will believe her. Then one night, when she comes face to face with Matthew in a dark parking lot, she realizes that he knows she’s been watching him, that she’s really on to him. And that this is the beginning of a horrifying nightmare she may not live to escape. . .

I live for psychological thrillers with killer twists!  This one sounded like one I needed to read for sure.  I generally pick every thriller that BOTM puts out, and haven’t been disappointed yet!

Even though I have a gazillion fancy bookmarks, I enjoy these simple and sturdy BOTM ones every month.

So what do you think of BOTM?  The total retail value of my box was $53.99 (currently $32.60 using Amazon prices), and I paid $22.49 ($12.50 with my 12-month subscription + $9.99 for my add-on book.) – so this is a fantastic deal, even over Amazon prices!  If you are bookworm like me, and want to be in the loop on the latest releases, I highly recommend this box – you just can’t go wrong!   I love being introduced to new authors, and titles I may not have even known about.  I’m also more inclined to try new genres I wouldn’t consider otherwise, so I’m expanding my horizons, too!

About the Author

Hi, I’m Cheryl, a.k.a. "CrazyDogMama". Welcome to my blog - it's about time you visited! Anything and everything goes here - seriously. I'm a 40-something introverted writer and maker of body care products.

I am obsessed with books (mainly the Holy Bible of late), writing, essential oils, intermittent fasting, road trips, subscription boxes, and all geeky things related to earthquakes, space weather and the last days written about in Revelation. I exist mainly on coffee. I'm not above writing about uncomfortable subjects, and political correctness isn't my priority, I'm just real. I also love Jesus. So, if you're good with all that, take a look around and get to know me! Even if you're not, I try my best to entertain and offer up good advice occasionally, so hopefully there is a little something here for everyone.

Oh, and my dog Jack is my muse, so I like to exploit him here. ;-)

This is my life.
